Cinderford's crime profile in March 2023 revealed a strikingly high incidence of violent crime, with violence and sexual offences accounting for nearly half (48.2%) of all reported incidents. At 9.2 crimes per 1,000 residents, the area's overall rate was 21.1% above the UK average of 7.6 per 1,000, a disparity that demands closer examination. The prominence of violent crime—39 cases recorded—contrasts sharply with the UK average for this category, which is 2.7 per 1,000. This anomaly may be influenced by the area's built-up character within the Forest of Dean, where population density and social dynamics could contribute to higher rates of interpersonal conflict. Anti-social behaviour, at 1.8 per 1,000, and drugs-related offences, at 0.5 per 1,000, both exceeded UK averages by 73% and 150% respectively, suggesting localized factors such as community cohesion or law enforcement presence may play a role. Seasonal context also appears relevant: as March marks the transition to spring, the lengthening evenings may have altered patterns of activity, increasing opportunities for crime in public spaces. While property crimes were relatively low (13 total), violent crime's dominance highlights a need for targeted interventions in areas where conflicts are more likely to escalate.
