Crawcrook and Greenside, a built-up area within Gateshead, recorded a crime rate of 1.5 per 1,000 residents in January 2026, placing it 77.9% below the UK average of 6.8 per 1,000. This continued to position the area as one of the safest in the UK, though the month saw a 100% increase in 'other theft' incidents compared to December. Anti-social behaviour remained the most prevalent crime category, accounting for 50% of all reported incidents, followed by other theft (16.7%) and violence and sexual offences (16.7%). The low crime rate may be partly attributable to the area’s compact size and the seasonal context of January, which typically sees reduced retail footfall and shorter daylight hours. However, the rise in other theft suggests a potential vulnerability in securing personal property during this time of year. Violence and sexual offences fell sharply by 80% compared to the previous month, consistent with the post-holiday lull common in January. Public order offences also dropped significantly, though this may reflect reduced outdoor activity rather than a long-term trend. The overall crime profile remains heavily dominated by anti-social behaviour, which, while 14% below the UK average, continues to require attention from local authorities and residents alike. The area’s low crime rate compared to the UK average is likely influenced by its urban character, with a mix of residential and commercial spaces that may foster a sense of community and deter criminal activity. However, the small but notable increase in other theft highlights the need for ongoing vigilance and targeted measures to address this specific category of crime.
