In August 2023, Huntingdon’s crime rate stood at 10.4 per 1,000, 28.4% above the UK average of 8.1 per 1,000. This figure underscores a marked divergence from national trends, with the area’s crime profile dominated by a near-equal split between property and violent crimes. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 33.5% of all reported incidents (93 cases), while property crimes (90 cases) followed closely behind, creating a balance that contrasts with the UK’s typically higher proportion of property-related offences. Seasonal factors may partly explain this dynamic: August, as a peak holiday month, could drive both anti-social behaviour and violent crime through increased social interaction and tourism, while property crime rates may be influenced by the temporary absence of residents on vacation. Anti-social behaviour, though not typically a top-tier concern nationally, rose sharply to 21.6% of total crimes (60 cases), 60% above the UK average, suggesting a localised challenge in managing public order. Meanwhile, shoplifting remained below the UK average (17% below), reflecting Huntingdon’s smaller retail footprint or effective local deterrents. These patterns indicate a combination of seasonal activity, community characteristics, and policing priorities, with August’s data serving as a critical indicator for targeted interventions.
