Yaxley (Huntingdonshire) recorded a crime rate of 6.5 per 1,000 residents in May 2023, placing it 18.8% below the UK average of 8.0. This rate, though lower than national benchmarks, was marked by a stark outlier: violence and sexual offences, which accounted for 58.1% of all crimes and were 37% above the UK average of 2.8 per 1,000. The prominence of violent crime in Yaxley contrasts with the UK’s broader mix, where property crimes often dominate. Anti-social behaviour (16.1% of total crimes) and criminal damage (12.9%) followed as the second and third most common categories, both showing notable deviations from national averages. The seasonal context of May—characterised by longer evenings and increased socialising—may have contributed to the sharp rise in violence and sexual offences. This pattern aligns with observations in similar built-up areas, where outdoor activity and alcohol consumption often correlate with spikes in violent crime. However, other categories, such as shoplifting (1.6% of crimes) and public order offences (3.2%), were significantly below UK averages, suggesting that Yaxley’s crime profile is shaped by unique local factors. The overall lower crime rate compared to the UK may reflect Yaxley’s smaller population and more rural-adjacent character, which often correlates with lower levels of certain crime types. Yet the concentration of violent crime remains a critical area for local authorities to address, particularly given the 111.8% month-on-month increase in this category.
