Violence and sexual offences dominated Holyhead’s crime profile in July 2023, accounting for 34.2% of all reported incidents. This category alone was 51% above the UK average, with 51 cases recorded at a rate of 4.2 per 1,000 residents. The area’s built-up coastal character, combined with its role as a tourist destination during peak summer months, likely contributes to this elevated rate. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, making up 23.5% of crimes and 104% above the UK average, while criminal damage and arson added another 10.7% of the total. These figures align with the seasonal context of July, when schools are out, festivals and events draw large crowds, and the town’s retail and leisure sectors see heightened activity. The high proportion of violent crimes may be linked to the transient nature of the population, with visitors and temporary residents potentially contributing to conflicts in public spaces. Shoplifting also rose sharply, reflecting the impact of increased retail footfall during the summer.1 per 1,000 remains 83% above the UK average. This suggests that while Holyhead’s crime profile is influenced by its geographic and demographic features, targeted interventions in high-risk areas may help mitigate the disproportionate rise in certain categories.
