Ryde's crime rate in May 2023 reached 11.2 per 1,000 residents, placing the area 40% above the UK average of 8.0 per 1,000. This marked increase follows a pattern of seasonal fluctuations, with longer evenings and bank holidays likely contributing to heightened outdoor activity and associated risks. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 50.6% of all reported incidents. This category alone was 105% above the UK average, suggesting a persistent challenge in addressing violent crime in the built-up area. Public order offences also surged, making up 18.6% of total crimes and 218% above the UK average. This spike may be linked to the area's coastal location and the increased socialising that typically accompanies the spring season. Anti-social behaviour, though a smaller proportion of total crimes (10.8%), saw an extraordinary 262.5% increase from April, raising concerns about community cohesion. In contrast, property crimes accounted for only 15.2% of all reported incidents, with burglary and vehicle crime both below UK averages. This divergence between violent and property crime trends may reflect the area's unique demographic and geographic characteristics, as well as the impact of seasonal factors on different types of criminal activity.
