Islington's overall crime rate in January 2024 stood at 13.5 per 1,000 residents, placing the area 82.4% above the UK average of 7.4 per 1,000. This rate reflects a combination of urban dynamics, with the most common crimes being violence and sexual offences (21.0% of total), anti-social behaviour (19.7%), and other theft (14.3%). The post-holiday period in January likely contributed to patterns of anti-social behaviour and property crime, as reduced retail footfall and shorter daylight hours may have influenced activity in public spaces. Violence and sexual offences, while showing a 6.2% decrease from December, still remain 8% above the UK average. Anti-social behaviour, however, was high, 173% above the UK average, suggesting a need for targeted interventions in high-traffic areas. Other theft, including shoplifting and theft from the person, also showed significant elevations, with shoplifting alone 23% above the UK average. These patterns align with Islington's role as a major urban centre with a dense population and diverse community, where public spaces and transport hubs may be particularly vulnerable to certain types of crime.
