Linthwaite and Slaithwaite’s crime rate in October 2024 stood at 6.3 per 1,000 residents, placing the area 22.2% below the UK average of 8.1. This continued underperformance relative to national figures reflects the area’s character as a small, largely rural built-up district within Kirklees, where low population density and community-oriented policing likely contribute to sustained safety. The most common crimes were violence and sexual offences (43.1% of total incidents), followed by vehicle crime (12.3%) and public order offences (9.2%). These patterns align with the area’s limited retail presence and low nightlife activity, which may reduce opportunities for theft from the person or public disorder. However, the seasonal context of October—darker evenings, Halloween festivities, and the clocks going back—may have influenced the rise in vehicle crime and criminal damage, as these factors could encourage more opportunistic behaviour. The relatively low levels of burglary (4.6%) and other theft (4.6%) further support the idea that the area’s rural nature and tight-knit communities deter property-related crime. While the overall rate remains stable, the slight month-on-month increase highlights the need for continued monitoring of local trends, particularly around vehicle security and vandalism.
