December 2024 saw a notable surge in specific crime types within Bailrigg, a built-up area within Lancaster. While the overall crime rate of 6.9 per 1,000 residents remained 2.8% below the UK average, the distribution of crime types revealed concerning trends. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 25.6% of total crimes, marking a 233.3% increase from November. This spike aligns with seasonal factors such as the Christmas shopping peak and extended dark evenings, which may contribute to heightened opportunities for such crimes. Property crimes, comprising 58.9% of reported incidents, remained the most prevalent category, though their rate (4.1 per 1,000) was 23% below the UK average for this category. The sharp rise in other theft (+250.0%) and anti-social behaviour (+200.0%) suggests a shift in criminal activity patterns during the festive season. These increases are consistent with the area's characteristics as a mixed-use residential and commercial zone, where seasonal demand for retail and hospitality services may inadvertently create vulnerabilities. The data highlights the need for targeted awareness during periods of increased foot traffic and reduced visibility, particularly in areas with high concentrations of retail and entertainment venues.
