November 2023 presented a mixed picture of crime trends in Chatham, with overall rates remaining 30.7% above the UK average of 7.5 per 1,000. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 41.2% of all reported incidents (331 cases), significantly exceeding the UK average of 2.6 per 1,000. This is consistent with the area's character as a built-up urban centre within Medway, where population density and social dynamics may contribute to higher rates of interpersonal crime. Anti-social behaviour (102 cases) and criminal damage and arson (86 cases) followed closely, with the latter 86% above the UK average. The seasonal context of November—marked by shorter evenings, Bonfire Night events, and Black Friday shopping—likely amplified opportunities for both violent and property-related crimes. While the overall crime rate showed a 10.8% decrease from October, this reduction does not mitigate the persistent gap relative to national benchmarks. The concentration of violent crime in Chatham may be influenced by its proximity to major transport links and the presence of retail hubs that attract both local and transient populations. The high rate of anti-social behaviour could be linked to the area's urban density and the challenges of managing public spaces in a historically industrial region transitioning to mixed-use development. These patterns suggest that targeted community initiatives and enhanced policing in high-risk zones may be necessary to address the underlying factors driving crime in this built-up area.
