Violence and sexual offences dominated Medway’s crime profile in April 2024, accounting for nearly 40% of all reported crimes and sitting 45% above the UK average for this category. This stark contrast to the national trend highlights a localised concentration of violent incidents, which may partly explain why Medway’s overall crime rate of 9.3 per 1,000 residents places it 20.8% above the UK average of 7.7. The seasonal context of April—marked by Easter, spring weather, and increased outdoor activity—likely contributes to this pattern, as public spaces see higher foot traffic and social interactions. Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage also exceeded UK averages by 23% and 53% respectively, suggesting persistent challenges in managing disorder and property-related crime across the district. While shoplifting and bicycle theft rose slightly above UK levels, the most alarming figure remains the disproportionate prevalence of violent crime, which could reflect a combination of socioeconomic factors and community dynamics unique to Medway. The breakdown of crimes reveals a stark imbalance: over a third of all incidents fall into the violent category, compared to less than 17% for property crimes, indicating a need for targeted interventions in areas where interpersonal conflict is most acute.
