Rochester’s crime rate in September 2024 stood at 9.0 per 1,000 residents, placing it 16.9% above the UK average of 7.7. This figure highlights the area’s distinct challenges compared to the national profile, where violent crimes and anti-social behaviour dominate the local crime picture. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 42.3% of all reported crimes, with a rate of 3.8 per 1,000—significantly higher than the UK average of 2.6. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, contributing 15.2% of incidents at a rate of 1.4 per 1,000. Shoplifting, at 0.9 per 1,000, was also 32% above the UK average, reflecting the impact of high-footfall retail areas in the built-up zone. Seasonal factors may partly explain these patterns: as September marks the start of the academic year and the transition from summer to autumn, the area’s mix of commuter routes, student populations, and retail hubs likely contributes to the elevated rates of property crimes and public order offences. However, the contrast with the UK average suggests that local dynamics—such as the proximity to Medway’s transport networks and the density of residential and commercial zones—play a significant role in shaping the crime profile. While the overall rate remains concerning, the relative stability of certain categories, such as theft from the person, which fell by half compared to August, indicates that targeted interventions may be having an effect.
