The most striking development in Cullompton’s November 2023 crime data was the 100% increase in drug-related offences and possession of weapons, both of which moved from zero to two incidents—a sudden shift that defies typical seasonal patterns. While the overall crime rate of 2.9 per 1,000 residents remained 61.3% below the UK average, the nature of local crime revealed a mixed picture. Violence and sexual offences dominated, accounting for 45.7% of all incidents and 46% below the UK average for that category. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, at 22.9% of total crimes, also significantly below the national benchmark. The sharp rise in weapons possession, which exceeded the UK average by 233%, stood in stark contrast to the steep declines in public order offences (75% drop) and criminal damage and arson (75% drop). These fluctuations may be partially explained by November’s unique context: the aftermath of Bonfire Night, which typically sees spikes in anti-social behaviour, and the timing of Black Friday shopping, which could influence retail-related crimes. However, the sudden emergence of drug-related incidents—a category not previously prominent in Cullompton—suggests the need for further analysis. The town’s built-up area status within Mid Devon, combined with its relatively small population, likely contributes to its lower crime rates compared to larger urban centres, though the recent uptick in specific categories deserves closer attention.
