Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile in Mid Devon during November 2024, accounting for 42% of all reported crimes — the highest proportion of any category. This focus on interpersonal crime contrasts with the UK average, where such offences make up 2.6 per 1,000 residents compared to Mid Devon's 2.2 per 1,000, a 15% gap. The area's overall crime rate of 5.1 per 1,000 residents marked a 32.9% reduction compared to the UK average of 7.6, a significant achievement for a region that includes both rural and urban settlements. Seasonal factors likely played a role in shaping these patterns: the onset of darker evenings may have influenced anti-social behaviour and public order incidents, which were 22% below the UK average. Conversely, the proximity of Bonfire Night and Black Friday shopping could have created conditions for increased violent crime. The breakdown also revealed that anti-social behaviour (16.5% of all crimes) and criminal damage (11.5%) remained persistent issues, albeit at levels lower than the UK average. The area's relatively low rates of theft from the person (71% below the UK average) and shoplifting suggest effective policing or community engagement in retail areas. This profile illustrates a region where violent crime is the primary concern, but where overall safety remains markedly better than the national benchmark.
