Chepstow’s crime profile in April 2023 revealed a combination of seasonal and local factors, with overall crime remaining 4% below the UK average at 7.2 per 1,000 residents. Violence and sexual offences (28 incidents) and anti-social behaviour (28 incidents) dominated the crime profile, together accounting for over 65% of all reported incidents. This dual focus on violent and disruptive crimes contrasts with the UK average, where anti-social behaviour rates are significantly lower. The surge in anti-social behaviour—now 95% above the UK average—may reflect the area’s small-town dynamics, where limited public space oversight and community density could amplify such incidents. Spring weather and Easter-related activity may have contributed to increased outdoor gatherings, exacerbating tensions in shared spaces. Meanwhile, violent crime rates remained 12% below the UK average, due to Chepstow’s lower population density and limited nightlife compared to larger urban centres. The drop in shoplifting (85.7% decrease from March) aligns with seasonal patterns, as Easter’s reduced retail foot traffic likely curbed opportunities for such crimes. However, the sharp rise in other thefts (+66.7%) and anti-social behaviour suggests a need for targeted community engagement to address underlying issues. Local authorities may benefit from monitoring these trends closely, particularly as warmer weather and longer evenings could further influence crime patterns.
