July 2024 marked a notable shift in Baglan’s crime profile, with anti-social behaviour emerging as the most prevalent category, accounting for 32.9% of all recorded crimes. At 5.8 per 1,000 residents, Baglan’s overall crime rate remains 31% below the UK average of 8.4 per 1,000, underscoring its comparatively lower risk profile. However, the month’s data reveals a striking anomaly: anti-social behaviour surged by 118.2% compared to June, driven potentially by the summer festival season and extended daylight hours that encourage public gatherings. This spike contrasts with consistently low rates of property crime, including burglary (0.2 per 1,000) and vehicle crime (0.2 per 1,000), both of which are 57% and 35% below UK averages respectively. The seasonal context—schools out, tourism peak, and festivals—likely contributed to the rise in anti-social behaviour, as well as the unexpected emergence of shoplifting and robbery. These latter offences, while minor in number, may reflect opportunistic activity during crowded events. Meanwhile, violence and sexual offences, though 44% below the UK average, accounted for 27.4% of all crimes, suggesting a balance between property and violent crime that differs from national trends. The data highlights the combination of local geography, seasonal activity, and crime patterns, with Baglan’s built-up character and proximity to Neath Port Talbot’s industrial zones influencing these dynamics.
