January 2025 saw Neath Port Talbot record a crime rate of 6.5 per 1,000 residents, 8.5% below the UK average of 7.1. This marks the second consecutive month of improvement, following a 6.0 per 1,000 rate in December. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 45.4% of all reported incidents, significantly above the UK average of 2.5 per 1,000. This stark contrast highlights a localised challenge, potentially linked to the area's urban density and socio-economic factors. Anti-social behaviour (13.6%) and public order offences (10.2%) followed as the next most common categories, though both showed notable differences from national trends. Public order offences, at 0.7 per 1,000, were 52% higher than the UK average, suggesting a unique dynamic in local policing or community engagement. The seasonal context of January—characterised by shorter days and post-holiday lulls—may have influenced patterns, with reduced retail footfall curbing shoplifting (0.4 per 1,000, 35% below the UK rate). However, the persistent rise in violence and sexual offences, despite the overall rate being lower than the UK average, warrants closer examination of local factors such as alcohol-related incidents, youth activity, or under-resourced community support services. These findings underscore the complexity of crime trends, where a lower overall rate coexists with elevated rates in specific categories, demanding targeted interventions.
