March 2023 saw Holbury’s crime rate remain at 6.2 per 1,000 residents, 18.4% below the UK average, marking it as one of the safer built-up areas within the New Forest. The most significant finding was the disproportionate prevalence of violent crimes, which accounted for nearly half (46.9%) of all reported incidents—6% above the UK average for this category. This contrasted sharply with the sharp declines in other areas, such as anti-social behaviour (62% below the UK average) and shoplifting (39% below), which may reflect the area’s rural character and limited commercial activity. The seasonal context of March—marked by the transition to spring, longer evenings, and the clocks changing—likely contributed to the elevated levels of violence and sexual offences, as increased social interaction in the evenings may have created conditions conducive to such crimes. Meanwhile, the relatively low rates of property-related offences, including vehicle crime (17% below UK average) and criminal damage (17% below), suggest that the built-up nature of Holbury, combined with its proximity to natural spaces, may act as a deterrent to certain types of crime. These patterns highlight the combination of geography, seasonality, and local demographics in shaping crime profiles, even within a region generally associated with low urban crime rates.
