Violence and sexual offences dominate North Devon's crime profile in October 2024, accounting for nearly 40% of all reported crimes. At 6.1 crimes per 1,000 residents, the area's overall crime rate is 24.7% below the UK average of 8.1 per 1,000. This stark contrast with the national figure highlights the relative safety of North Devon, a coastal and rural district where community cohesion may play a role in mitigating violent incidents. The top three crime categories—violence and sexual offences, anti-social behaviour, and shoplifting—collectively make up 55% of all reported crimes, suggesting a focus on interpersonal disputes and minor offences rather than large-scale criminal activity. Seasonal factors in October, including darker evenings and the approach of Halloween, may contribute to increased reports of violence and anti-social behaviour, as outdoor activities and alcohol consumption patterns shift. However, a direct link between these factors and the crime rate, though the timing aligns with typical patterns observed in similar regions. The lower-than-average rates for property crimes, such as burglary (0.3 per 1,000) and vehicle crime (0.1 per 1,000), further reinforce the area's distinct crime profile compared to more densely populated urban centres. These findings suggest that North Devon's crime dynamics are shaped by its rural character, with fewer opportunities for certain types of crime but a persistent need for targeted interventions in violent and anti-social behaviour.
