Eckington's December 2023 crime rate of 5.4 per 1,000 residents marked a 25% reduction compared to the UK average of 7.2 per 1,000, reflecting a safer environment than the national benchmark. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, which accounted for 55% of all incidents (22 cases), followed by 'other crime' (12.5%, five cases). This distribution contrasts sharply with the UK average, where violence and sexual offences typically account for a smaller share of total crimes. The seasonal context of December—characterised by Christmas shopping, extended evenings, and potential increases in alcohol consumption—likely contributed to the rise in violent incidents. However, the significant drop in anti-social behaviour (down 71.4%) and criminal damage (down 85.7%) suggests that some factors may have mitigated risk during the festive period. The area's built-up nature within North East Derbyshire, combined with its relatively low population density, may explain the lower-than-average crime rates for property-related offences such as burglary and vehicle crime, which were 43% and 33% above UK averages respectively. These findings illustrate how local conditions can shape crime patterns independently of national trends, with Eckington's unique geography and community characteristics playing a pivotal role.
