Baldock's built-up area recorded 99 crimes in July 2024, equating to 9.2 crimes per 1,000 residents — a rate 9.5% above the UK average of 8.4. This figure translates to approximately one crime for every 109 residents over the course of the month, highlighting the density of incidents relative to the area's population of 10,804. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 36 cases (36.4% of total crimes), followed by anti-social behaviour (20 cases, 20.2%) and criminal damage and arson (17 cases, 17.2%). These patterns align with July's seasonal context: peak summer, school holidays, and a surge in tourism and festivals, which likely increased foot traffic and social interactions in public spaces. The high rate of violence and sexual offences may be partly explained by the area's mix of residential and commercial zones, where late-night activity and community events could contribute to heightened incidents. Anti-social behaviour's sharp rise, 31% above the UK average, may reflect the challenges of managing crowds during festivals or summer events. Meanwhile, the significant spike in criminal damage and arson (154% above UK average) suggests possible links to property-related disputes or vandalism in areas with temporary event setups. Shoplifting and other theft remained close to UK averages, indicating that retail-focused crimes were not elevated this month. The data underscores the need for targeted policing strategies during peak summer periods, particularly in areas experiencing high levels of public activity.
