Violence and sexual offences dominate Portishead’s crime profile in June 2023, accounting for 31.3% of all reported crimes. At 5.0 per 1,000 residents, the area’s crime rate is 41.2% below the UK average of 8.5 per 1,000—a significant gap that reflects the town’s character as a relatively tranquil coastal community. The prevalence of violence and sexual offences, while lower than the UK average, may be influenced by the area’s mix of residential and commercial spaces, where interactions between residents and visitors can occasionally escalate. Anti-social behaviour, the second most common category, further contributes to the town’s crime picture, though it remains 32% below the UK average. This suggests that while localised tensions exist, they are not yet at levels seen in larger urban centres. The seasonal context of June—marking the start of summer and the onset of tourist activity—may explain the sharp rise in shoplifting, which jumped 260% compared to May. This increase could be linked to the influx of visitors to Portishead’s coastal attractions, creating opportunities for retail crime that are not typically seen during the winter months. However, the overall low crime rate and the absence of significant spikes in property crime suggest that the area’s policing strategies and community cohesion are effective in managing risks. The relatively low incidence of burglary and vehicle crime further reinforces the idea that Portishead’s built-up area is not a high-risk location for these types of offences, due to its smaller scale and tighter-knit community compared to more densely populated regions.
