Shiremoor’s crime profile in January 2025 was shaped by a persistent dominance of violence and sexual offences, which accounted for 31.4% of all reported crimes. At 4.3 per 1,000 residents, the area’s crime rate remained 39.4% below the UK average of 7.1 per 1,000, a gap that reflects broader regional differences in policing, demographics, and socioeconomic factors. The seasonal context of January—post-holiday, with shorter days and reduced retail footfall—likely contributed to a lower incidence of outdoor crimes, though this was offset by a rise in incidents tied to social interactions, such as anti-social behaviour and criminal damage. Violence and sexual offences, while slightly lower than in December, still accounted for the largest share of crimes, suggesting that local tensions or community dynamics may be a contributing factor. This category was also 44% below the UK average, indicating that Shiremoor’s approach to addressing violent crime may be more effective than national benchmarks. However, the 300% increase in criminal damage and arson—from one to four incidents—raises questions about potential changes in local enforcement or environmental factors, such as increased vandalism during colder months. Anti-social behaviour, which rose by 100% to 10 incidents, was 22% above the UK average, pointing to a specific challenge in managing community disturbances. These findings highlight the need for tailored strategies that balance the area’s relatively low crime rates with targeted interventions in rising categories.
