Nuneaton and Bedworth’s crime rate in May 2024 stood at 9.5 per 1,000 residents, 13.1% above the UK average of 8.4. This rate, while not extreme, reflects a consistent pattern of elevated crime in a mixed urban-rural district where social and economic dynamics intersect. Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile, accounting for 36.2% of all reported incidents—a share significantly higher than the UK average of 23%. This category’s rate of 3.5 per 1,000 is 23% above the national figure, suggesting a concentration of violent incidents in specific areas such as the town centre or nightlife hubs. Anti-social behaviour, at 2.0 per 1,000, also exceeded the UK average by 38%, a figure that may align with the area’s history of community tensions and the presence of multiple retail and leisure venues. Seasonal factors in May, including bank holidays and extended daylight hours, likely contribute to increased outdoor socialising, which may partly explain the higher rates of violence and anti-social incidents. However, direct causation, though the correlation with longer evenings is clear. Meanwhile, property crimes such as shoplifting and public order offences also showed rates above the UK average, indicating a broader challenge in managing low-level crime in a district with a mix of urban and suburban characteristics. These patterns underscore the need for tailored policing strategies and community engagement initiatives that address both immediate and systemic factors.
