Violence and sexual offences dominated Eston's crime profile in December 2023, accounting for 31.5% of all reported crimes. At 15.5 per 1,000 residents, the area's crime rate is 115.3% above the UK average of 7.2, highlighting a stark contrast to national trends. This elevated rate is driven by a combination of factors, including the seasonal context of December, which typically sees increased social activity, dark evenings, and the presence of empty homes during the holiday period. The prominence of violence and sexual offences may be linked to the area's built-up character within Redcar and Cleveland, where concentrated populations and commercial activity could contribute to higher incidents of interpersonal crime. Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage also featured prominently, with the former at 13.7% of total crimes and the latter at 13.4%. These figures are 126% and 275% above UK averages, respectively, suggesting systemic challenges in managing disorder and property-related offences. The seasonal context of December—marked by Christmas shopping, festive gatherings, and reduced daylight—likely amplifies these trends, as heightened foot traffic and social interactions may create environments conducive to such crimes. While property crimes like shoplifting and burglary were also notable, they accounted for a smaller share of the total (9.3% and 5.7%, respectively), indicating that violent and disorderly offences remain the primary concern for local residents and authorities.
