November 2025 marked a significant upward trend in Guisborough's crime rate, reaching 10.0 per 1,000, 37.0% above the UK average of 7.3 per 1,000. This surge was driven by a sharp rise in property-related crimes, particularly burglary, criminal damage, and arson, which collectively accounted for 26.4% of all reported incidents. Violence and sexual offences remained the most common category, contributing 25.3% of total crimes, though their rate (2.5 per 1,000) was 3% below the UK average. Anti-social behaviour, at 2.5 per 1,000, stood out as a major concern, being 136% above the national figure. The seasonal context of November—characterised by darker evenings, Bonfire Night, and the Black Friday shopping period—may have contributed to the increase in anti-social behaviour and property crimes, as these conditions often correlate with higher foot traffic and extended hours of activity in retail areas. Shoplifting, at 1.3 per 1,000, was 106% above the UK average, potentially linked to the high volume of shoppers during the month. The data suggests a combination of local factors, such as the built-up nature of Guisborough, and seasonal dynamics, which could explain the disproportionate rise in certain crime categories. While the overall rate is significantly higher than the UK average, the breakdown reveals a mixed picture, with some categories aligning more closely with national trends than others. The persistent challenge of anti-social behaviour, in particular, highlights the need for targeted interventions to address underlying social and environmental factors.
