February 2025 revealed an unexpected surge in drug-related crimes in Rhondda Cynon Taf, a trend that defied the typical low outdoor activity and pre-spring lull associated with the month. The area’s overall crime rate stood at 7.0 per 1,000 residents, placing it 4.5% above the UK average of 6.7 per 1,000. This discrepancy, though modest, underscores a broader pattern where violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile, accounting for 44.9% of all incidents. These crimes, at a rate of 3.2 per 1,000, were 36% higher than the UK average, a figure that may be partly explained by the area’s demographic profile or localised tensions. Anti-social behaviour, while lower than the UK average (18% below), remained a persistent issue, contributing 10.9% of total crimes. Public order offences, at 0.7 per 1,000, were 59% above the UK average, potentially linked to the area’s mix of urban and semi-rural environments. The seasonal context of February—typically a quieter month—failed to dampen the rise in drug-related crimes, which may suggest a deeper issue tied to local socioeconomic conditions or unmet community needs. While property crimes such as burglary and vehicle crime were below the UK average, the sharp increase in drug offences highlights a critical area for further attention.
