Violence and sexual offences dominated Rhondda’s crime profile in September 2023, accounting for 40.6% of all reported incidents—nearly double the share of the next most common category. At a crime rate of 4.2 per 1,000 residents, the area remained 47.5% below the UK average of 8.0, a gap that underscores the effectiveness of local crime prevention measures. The seasonal context of September, with its back-to-school and university freshers’ week, likely contributed to the prominence of violent crime, as young people returning to the area may have influenced local dynamics. Anti-social behaviour (13 cases) and criminal damage (11 cases) followed closely, suggesting a focus on disorder-related incidents rather than large-scale criminal activity. This pattern contrasts with broader UK trends, where property crimes often dominate, and highlights Rhondda’s unique profile as a built-up area with a lower proportion of theft and burglary compared to national averages. The relatively low rates of vehicle crime (79% below UK levels) and theft from the person (100% below) further reinforce this divergence, possibly reflecting a combination of community cohesion, effective policing, and the area’s character as a smaller, less densely populated built-up zone.
