April 2024 presented an intriguing crime picture for Rhondda, with the overall rate of 5.2 crimes per 1,000 residents placing it 32.5% below the UK average of 7.7. This performance, while commendable, masks a combination of trends. Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile, accounting for 46.2% of all incidents (54 cases).4 per 1,000 remains 6% below the UK average. This suggests that while violent crime is relatively low, it remains a significant proportion of the total crime burden. Public order offences, however, stood out as an anomaly, with a rate of 0.9 per 1,000 — 70% above the UK average — highlighting a potential focus on community management in local spaces. The seasonal context of April, with its Easter period and spring weather, likely contributed to increased outdoor activity, which may have influenced both public order and violent crime patterns. Anti-social behaviour, at 0.6 per 1,000 (51% below the UK average), and other theft categories (0.4 per 1,000, 29% below the UK average) indicate that property-related crimes remain relatively low in the area. This suggests a built-up environment where community engagement and local policing may be effective, though the public order challenge requires further attention.
