October 2024 saw Egham's crime rate climb to 8.2 per 1,000 residents, a 1.2% increase above the UK average. The most striking trend was the sharp rise in criminal damage and arson, which jumped 128.6% from September. This anomaly contrasts with the stability of other categories, such as burglary and robbery, which remained well below UK averages. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 29.8% of all crimes, a slightly lower share than the UK average, while anti-social behaviour dominated with 21.6% of incidents. This high level of anti-social behaviour, 40% above the UK average, may be attributed to Egham's role as a commuter town with a mix of residential and retail areas. Public order offences also surged, 79% above the UK average, possibly linked to the darker evenings of October and Halloween-related activity. The area's relatively low rates of vehicle crime and burglary—36% and 39% below UK averages, respectively—suggest that local security measures or community engagement may be effective in these areas. However, the 275% spike in bicycle theft, far exceeding the UK average, raises concerns about infrastructure gaps or unmet demand for secure parking. Seasonal factors, including the clocks going back and shorter daylight hours, likely contributed to the overall increase in public order and anti-social behaviour. These patterns highlight the combination of local demographics, geography, and temporal influences on crime trends.
