In August 2023, Runnymede recorded 585 crimes, translating to a crime rate of 6.4 per 1,000 residents—21% below the UK average of 8.1 per 1,000. This figure, when scaled to the area’s population of 92,118, illustrates a relatively low incidence of crime compared to the national context. The most prevalent crime type was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 32.5% of all reported incidents (190 cases), followed by anti-social behaviour (16.8%) and other theft (11.1%). These patterns align with the area’s character as a suburban district with a mix of residential and commercial zones, where high foot traffic and community engagement may contribute to lower rates of property crime. Seasonal factors also appear to influence crime trends, with August—a peak holiday month—potentially increasing risks of burglary due to empty homes and shoplifting due to increased retail activity. However, the overall crime rate remains significantly lower than the UK average, reflecting a combination of local policing strategies, community initiatives, and the area’s demographic profile. While violence and sexual offences dominate the crime picture, their rate is 20% below the UK average, suggesting effective interventions in this category. Anti-social behaviour, at 1.1 per 1,000, also falls below the national rate, indicating that community-focused policing may be yielding results. Other theft, however, exceeds the UK average by 11%, highlighting a specific vulnerability in this category. These findings underscore the importance of targeted measures to address rising shoplifting and other theft incidents, while maintaining the positive trajectory in reducing violent crime and anti-social behaviour.
