December 2023 saw Aintree maintain a crime rate of 5.3 per 1,000 residents, a figure 26.4% below the UK average of 7.2 per 1,000. This performance positions Aintree as one of the safer built-up areas within Sefton, a metropolitan borough in Merseyside. The most common crime category was anti-social behaviour, which accounted for 28.6% of all reported incidents, followed by violence and sexual offences (22.9%) and public order offences (8.6%). These patterns align with the seasonal context of December, a month marked by Christmas shopping, party season, and prolonged darkness, which can exacerbate anti-social activity. The area’s relatively low crime rate may be partly explained by its proximity to urban amenities, which could foster community cohesion and deter criminal activity. However, the 61% gap between Aintree’s anti-social behaviour rate and the UK average raises questions about local enforcement or social dynamics. Violence and sexual offences, though lower than the UK average by 54%, saw a notable 33.3% month-on-month increase, linked to holiday-related gatherings or increased alcohol consumption. Public order and shoplifting rates also shifted: the latter fell by 70%, due to reduced retail activity over the festive period, while public order offences remained stable. These figures illustrate how Aintree’s crime profile reflects both its urban character and the seasonal rhythms that shape community interactions.
