Violence and sexual offences dominated Oswestry’s crime profile in January 2024, accounting for nearly a third of all reported crimes. At 7.0 per 1,000 residents, the area’s overall crime rate was 5.4% below the UK average of 7.4 per 1,000, reflecting a consistent trend of lower-than-average violence rates. The town’s crime picture was shaped by seasonal factors, with shorter days and reduced retail footfall typical of the post-holiday period likely contributing to a quieter street environment. However, shoplifting remained a persistent issue, with 23 incidents recorded—128% above the UK average for this category. This anomaly may be linked to Oswestry’s historic market town character, where retail spaces remain a focal point for illicit activity despite seasonal dips. Anti-social behaviour (16.4% of crimes) and other theft (8.2%) also featured prominently, suggesting that localised tensions and opportunistic thefts continued to influence crime patterns. While property crimes accounted for 39.3% of the total, the balance between violent and property crime was skewed, with violent offences far outpacing their UK counterparts. This contrast highlights Oswestry’s unique demographic and geographic profile, where a mix of historic infrastructure and modern amenities may create conditions for both targeted and opportunistic criminal activity.
