March 2024 saw Swadlincote’s crime rate fall to 5.9 per 1,000 residents, a 23.4% reduction below the UK average of 7.7 per 1,000. This decline, however, was not uniform across all crime types. Violence and sexual offences remained the most prevalent, accounting for 35.4% of all reported crimes, followed by anti-social behaviour (15.1%) and public order issues (11.3%). The seasonal context of March—a time of transition to spring, with longer evenings and the clocks changing—may have influenced patterns. The rise in public order offences, which increased by 14.3% from February, contrasts with the overall downward trend, suggesting localized factors may have played a role. The area’s violent crime rate (2.1 per 1,000) remains significantly below the UK average, while anti-social behaviour also lags behind nationally. This divergence could be linked to Swadlincote’s character as a built-up area within South Derbyshire, where community policing efforts and the presence of local amenities may contribute to lower rates of certain crimes. However, the unexpected increase in public order offences raises questions about whether specific events or shifts in community dynamics during March impacted this category. The overall trend, while positive, highlights the need for ongoing monitoring of crime patterns to address emerging issues effectively.
