South Holland’s crime rate in May 2023 (4.4 per 1,000 residents) marked a significant 45% reduction compared to the UK average of 8.0 per 1,000. This stark contrast positions the area as one of the safer local authority districts in England and Wales, a trend that has persisted for several years. The most prevalent crime type was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 36.5% of all reported crimes, followed by anti-social behaviour (24.3%) and criminal damage and arson (10.2%). These figures align with South Holland’s character as a largely rural district, where community cohesion and lower population density may contribute to lower rates of property crime and public order offences compared to urban counterparts. However, the prominence of violence and sexual offences suggests a need for targeted interventions, particularly in areas with higher concentrations of young people or social hubs. Seasonal factors, such as longer evenings and increased outdoor drinking, likely influenced the rise in anti-social behaviour and public order offences, which were 55% and 59% below the UK average respectively. Despite these challenges, the overall crime rate’s consistency with historical data indicates that local policing strategies and community engagement efforts have likely played a role in maintaining this lower-than-average profile.
