Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile in Diss during October 2023, accounting for 48.1% of all reported incidents. With 25 cases recorded, this category not only outpaced other crime types but also remained 7% below the UK average of 2.7 per 1,000 residents. The area’s overall crime rate of 5.3 per 1,000 residents marked a 33.8% deficit compared to the national average of 8.0, a figure that underscores Diss’s relative safety. This contrast with the UK profile may be attributed to the area’s semi-rural nature, where community cohesion and limited urban density can act as natural deterrents to more severe criminal activity. Seasonal factors also played a role, as the transition into darker evenings and the Halloween period likely influenced patterns of public order offences and anti-social behaviour. While public order incidents rose 19% above the UK average, the broader trend of declining violent crime suggests that local efforts—such as targeted policing or community engagement—may be contributing to this positive trajectory. The prominence of violence and sexual offences, however, indicates a need for continued focus on interventions that address interpersonal conflict and support vulnerable groups within the population.
