Jarrow’s crime rate in July 2023 stood at 12.5 per 1,000 residents, placing it 50.6% above the UK average of 8.3. This marked a significant departure from the usual seasonal patterns, as the area typically experiences a slight dip in crime during the summer months due to increased community engagement and tourism. The most prevalent crime type was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 31.1% of all reported crimes, followed by anti-social behaviour at 23.4% and criminal damage and arson at 16.3%. These figures are particularly striking given that Jarrow is a built-up area within South Tyneside, where community cohesion and local policing efforts usually contribute to lower rates of violent crime. However, the surge in anti-social behaviour may be linked to the high number of outdoor events and festivals that take place in the area during July, creating environments conducive to such incidents. The rate of criminal damage and arson, 2.0 per 1,000, is 212% above the UK average, suggesting that targeted interventions may be needed to address underlying issues such as vandalism in public spaces. Meanwhile, the relatively low rate of burglary (0.2 per 1,000) and shoplifting (0.5 per 1,000) compared to UK averages indicates that retail areas in Jarrow may be benefiting from effective security measures or community vigilance. The overall crime profile reflects a combination of local factors, including the seasonal influx of tourists and the presence of community-focused initiatives that have helped mitigate certain types of crime.
