Violence and sexual offences emerged as the dominant category in Yarm’s crime profile in April 2024, accounting for 25.5% of all reported crimes. This category, at 1.5 per 1,000 residents, was 41% below the UK average of 2.6 per 1,000, highlighting a marked divergence from national trends. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, contributing 19.6% of incidents and remaining 2% below the UK average. The overall crime rate of 6.0 per 1,000 residents was 22.1% lower than the UK’s 7.7 per 1,000, a gap that reflects Yarm’s relatively safer profile. Seasonal factors may have influenced these patterns, as the Easter period and spring weather typically drive increased outdoor activity, which could contribute to anti-social behaviour and public order issues. However, the significant drop in shoplifting (-33.3%) and vehicle crime (-50%) suggests that local initiatives or seasonal shifts, such as reduced foot traffic during holidays, may have mitigated certain risks. The area’s built-up character within Stockton-on-Tees likely plays a role in shaping these trends, with a mix of residential and commercial spaces influencing the balance between property and violent crimes. While the rise in other theft cases (+600%) indicates a growing concern, the overall trajectory remains consistent with Yarm’s historical position as a low-crime area.
