July 2024 saw Swindon's overall crime rate at 7.8 per 1,000, marking a 7.1% reduction compared to the UK average of 8.4. This figure reflects a combination of seasonal factors and local dynamics, with the most significant deviation from the UK average found in public order offences. While violent crimes such as violence and sexual offences accounted for 33.8% of all reported incidents, their rate of 2.6 per 1,000 was 9% below the UK average. Conversely, anti-social behaviour emerged as a notable concern, with a rate of 2.0 per 1,000—38% above the UK average. This discrepancy may partly explain the 25.5% month-on-month rise in public order offences, which surged to 128 incidents. The summer season, characterised by festivals, school holidays, and increased tourism, likely contributed to heightened public spaces activity, creating conditions conducive to such offences. Anti-social behaviour's disproportionate prevalence in Swindon could be tied to its urban layout, with high-density residential areas and commercial hubs fostering environments where such incidents are more likely to occur. Meanwhile, shoplifting and vehicle crime both showed declines, reflecting the impact of summer-specific security measures or changes in consumer behaviour during the holiday season. These patterns underscore the need for targeted interventions during peak tourist periods, while also highlighting areas where local crime prevention strategies have yielded positive outcomes.
