Kingsteignton’s crime rate in January 2024 stood at 5.8 per 1,000 residents, placing it 21.6% below the UK average of 7.4 per 1,000. This figure, while showing a 57.3% increase from December’s 3.7 per 1,000, reflects a combination of local and seasonal factors. The most prevalent crime type was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 32.4% of all incidents (24 cases). This category, at 1.9 per 1,000, was 27% below the UK average, suggesting a relatively lower incidence of violent crime in the area compared to the national picture. Vehicle crime, however, emerged as a striking outlier: with 19 incidents (1.5 per 1,000), it was 200% above the UK average of 0.5 per 1,000. This discrepancy may be explained by Kingsteignton’s proximity to major transport routes or its built-up nature, which could create conditions conducive to vehicle-related thefts. Anti-social behaviour also featured prominently, contributing 13.5% of all crimes (10 incidents), though this rate remained 19% below the UK average. The seasonal context of January—a post-holiday period marked by shorter days and reduced retail activity—likely influenced these patterns, with fewer outdoor crimes but increased vehicle-related incidents. These trends highlight the importance of contextualising crime data within both local geography and temporal rhythms, ensuring that comparisons to national averages are interpreted with nuance.
