In July 2023, Tendring recorded a crime rate of 8.2 per 1,000 residents, 1.2% below the UK average of 8.3 per 1,000. This figure, while slightly lower than the national benchmark, masks a significant shift in the balance between violent and property crimes. Violent crimes accounted for 43.4% of all reported incidents—560 cases—compared to 31.9% for property crimes (412 cases). This dominance of violent crime, particularly in the category of violence and sexual offences (3.6 per 1,000, 29% above the UK average), may partly explain the area's overall rate and suggests heightened activity during the summer months. Seasonal factors appear to play a pivotal role: with schools out, tourism at its peak, and festivals drawing large crowds, the likelihood of public order offences and violent encounters likely increases. Anti-social behaviour, however, remained 37% below the UK average, potentially reflecting local policing efforts or the transient nature of summer visitors. The data also reveals a 61% rise in shoplifting, which could be attributed to increased retail footfall, though this was offset by a 38% decline in vehicle crime, due to improved parking security. These patterns highlight how Tendring's crime profile is shaped by both its geographical context and the rhythms of summer, with implications for community safety and resource allocation.
