Tewkesbury’s crime profile in March 2023 revealed a combination of expected trends and unexpected anomalies. The overall crime rate of 4.5 per 1,000 residents — 40.8% below the UK average — was driven primarily by violent crimes, which accounted for 38% of all incidents (176 cases). This figure, at 1.7 per 1,000 residents, was 38% below the UK average of 2.7 per 1,000, a discrepancy that may be attributed to the town’s character as a historic market town with limited nightlife and high-street retail activity compared to larger urban centres. Anti-social behaviour (15.6% of all crimes) and public order offences (10.6%) followed as the next most common categories, both significantly below the UK average. The seasonal context of March — a transitional period with longer evenings and the clocks moving forward — likely influenced patterns, as increased daylight hours and changing social rhythms may have affected both victim behaviour and offender opportunities. However, the most striking finding was the unexpected rise in 'Other crime', which was 33% above the UK average, a category that typically sees lower rates in rural or historic areas. This anomaly suggests a shift in the types of crimes being reported, linked to changes in policing focus, reporting habits, or unmonitored activities in the area’s more secluded or less frequented spaces.
