February 2025 saw Broadstairs record a crime rate of 5.5 per 1,000, placing it 17.9% below the UK average of 6.7 per 1,000. This figure, while lower than the national benchmark, reveals a nuanced picture shaped by specific crime trends. Violence and sexual offences dominated the monthly tally, accounting for 39.6% of all incidents (55 cases), a rate of 2.2 per 1,000—6% below the UK average. This could be attributed to the area’s relatively small population and the absence of large-scale nightlife hubs typically associated with higher violent crime. Shoplifting, however, emerged as a striking outlier, with 25 cases (18.0% of total crimes) at a rate of 1.0 per 1,000—61% above the UK average of 0.6 per 1,000. The surge may be explained by the town’s retail presence, including its historic High Street and tourist attractions, which draw foot traffic during winter months. Anti-social behaviour, at 14 cases (10.1% of total), also rose sharply.6 per 1,000 was 38% below the UK average. This apparent contradiction may reflect the area’s compact built-up nature, where community policing and local engagement efforts could mitigate certain types of disorder despite seasonal fluctuations. Overall, the data aligns with the characteristics of a coastal built-up area, where tourism, retail activity, and seasonal rhythms shape crime patterns differently than in larger urban or rural settings.
