Ramsgate’s crime rate in May 2023 stood at 12.9 per 1,000 residents, a figure that is 61.3% higher than the UK average of 8.0 per 1,000. This stark deviation from national trends underscores the area’s unique challenges, particularly in violent and anti-social crimes. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 38.5% of all reported crimes, with 208 incidents — a rate of 5.0 per 1,000 residents — placing them 80% above the UK average. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, contributing 18.3% of crimes at 2.4 per 1,000, also 80% above the UK figure. These patterns align with Ramsgate’s character as a coastal town with a mix of residential, retail, and tourist areas, where longer evenings and bank holidays in May may have encouraged outdoor drinking and socialising, creating environments conducive to such offences. Criminal damage and arson, at 1.2 per 1,000, were 94% above the UK average, potentially linked to the area’s older housing stock and the seasonal increase in vandalism. Meanwhile, shoplifting rose sharply, with 46 incidents — 1.1 per 1,000 — 124% above the UK average, likely reflecting the town’s retail activity and the influx of visitors during the early summer. Despite these concerns, some categories showed slight improvements: burglary and theft from the person both decreased, though the latter’s decline was modest. The overall picture suggests that while Ramsgate faces significant challenges in violent and anti-social crime, targeted efforts may be mitigating risks in other areas. Residents are advised to remain alert, particularly in high-traffic zones and during late evenings, as the data indicates a clear correlation between seasonal factors and the rise in specific crime types.
