Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile in Chafford Hundred and West Thurrock during June 2023, accounting for 27.6% of all reported crimes. This category, which includes assaults, sexual offences, and domestic violence, was 4% below the UK average at 2.8 per 1,000 residents. However, the overall crime rate for the area was 10.3 per 1,000, a figure 21.2% higher than the UK’s 8.5 per 1,000. This disparity suggests local factors may be influencing crime patterns, such as the area’s mix of residential and commercial zones. The second most common crime was vehicle-related offences, with 37 incidents reported at a rate of 1.6 per 1,000. This is 240% above the UK average and may be linked to the area’s proximity to major roads and motorway networks. Shoplifting followed closely, with 36 cases recorded at 1.6 per 1,000, a rate 196% above the national average. The seasonal context of June, with its longer daylight hours and increasing tourism, may have contributed to these patterns. Retail areas in the built-up zones of West Thurrock are likely to attract both residents and visitors, creating opportunities for theft. The high rate of vehicle crime could also be explained by the presence of car parks and service stations in the area, which are common targets for opportunistic crimes. These findings highlight the need for tailored policing strategies that address both violent and property-related crimes in this mixed-use urban environment.
