Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile in Tonbridge and Malling during April 2023, accounting for 38.7% of all reported incidents. This category, which recorded 301 cases, had a rate of 2.2 per 1,000 residents—15% below the UK average of 2.6 per 1,000. The district’s overall crime rate of 5.7 per 1,000 residents marked a 24% reduction compared to the UK average of 7.5 per 1,000, reflecting a generally safer environment than the national picture. Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage and arson followed as the second and third most common crimes, with rates of 0.9 and 0.7 per 1,000 respectively. The seasonal context of April—characterised by Easter and the onset of spring—may have influenced crime patterns, with increased outdoor activity potentially contributing to higher public order offences. While the district’s lower-than-average rates suggest effective policing or community initiatives, the dominance of violent crime indicates a need for targeted interventions in this area. The balance between property and violent crime also shifted slightly, with violent crime making up 38.7% of the total, compared to 33.6% for property crimes. This mix aligns with the area’s character as a mix of urban and rural communities, where high streets and public spaces may drive incidents of violence and disorder. The relatively low rates of shoplifting and vehicle crime—38% and 33% below UK averages respectively—suggest that local efforts to deter such crimes may be working, though the persistence of violent crime highlights ongoing challenges.
