November 2023 saw a striking anomaly in Polegate’s crime profile: shoplifting surged by 114.3% compared to October, jumping from seven to 15 incidents. This sharp increase in retail-related crime contrasts with broader declines in other categories, including a 50% drop in public order offences and a 42.9% reduction in criminal damage and arson. The overall crime rate for the built-up area stood at 5.2 per 1,000 residents, 30.7% below the UK average of 7.5 per 1,000. Violence and sexual offences remained the most prevalent category, accounting for 39.7% of all reported crimes, though they were 23% below the UK average for this category. Anti-social behaviour and shoplifting emerged as the second and third most common crime types, with the latter’s surge defying expectations given the typically lower rates observed in built-up areas during November. Seasonal factors likely played a role: Black Friday shopping activity may have intensified retail thefts, while shorter daylight hours and Bonfire Night events could have influenced public order patterns. Despite the shoplifting spike, the area’s overall crime rate remains lower than the UK average, suggesting effective local policing or community initiatives that mitigate broader crime trends. The balance between property and violent crime also shifted slightly, with property crimes (25 incidents) narrowly outpacing violent crimes (23 incidents), a reversal of the usual trend in similar urban areas.
