Tavistock's built-up area in West Devon recorded a crime rate of 2.3 per 1,000 residents in May 2023, placing it 71.2% below the UK average of 8.0 per 1,000. The most prevalent crime type was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 40% of all reported incidents (12 cases), followed by anti-social behaviour (26.7%, 8 cases) and other theft (16.7%, 5 cases). This pattern aligns with Tavistock's character as a relatively small, rural-adjacent town with a mix of residential and commercial areas, where interpersonal disputes and localised tensions may contribute to higher rates of violence and anti-social behaviour. The seasonal context of May—marked by bank holidays, longer evenings, and increased outdoor socialising—may partly explain the prominence of these categories. While Tavistock's overall crime rate remains significantly lower than the UK average, the concentration of violent and disorderly incidents suggests a need for community vigilance. The low levels of property crime (7 total, 23.3% of all crimes) and the absence of burglary in April (now one case in May) further illustrate the area's distinct crime profile compared to larger urban centres. This data underscores the importance of localised factors in shaping crime patterns, with Tavistock's smaller population and rural proximity likely influencing both the types and frequency of incidents reported.
