April 2023 saw West Lancashire’s overall crime rate remain significantly lower than the UK average, with 5.4 crimes per 1,000 residents compared to the national figure of 7.5. This 28.0% deficit underscores the area’s generally safer profile, though several crime types warrant closer attention. Anti-social behaviour dominated the crime profile, accounting for 34.6% of all reported incidents—1.9 per 1,000 residents, a figure 61% higher than the UK average for this category. This spike may partly reflect the Easter period’s increased public activity, which can amplify conflicts in community spaces. Violence and sexual offences followed, making up 31.5% of crimes, though this category was 35% below the UK average. The seasonal context of spring, with longer evenings and more outdoor activity, likely contributes to the elevated anti-social behaviour figures. Property crimes—particularly burglary—showed a marked increase, though this will be explored in the highlights section. The area’s lower overall crime rate compared to the UK may be attributed to its mix of rural and suburban landscapes, where community cohesion and lower population density can act as natural deterrents to certain types of crime.
