February 2024 saw an unexpected surge in shoplifting crimes in Ormskirk, rising from three incidents in January to seven—a 133.3% increase. This sharp rise contrasts with the area’s generally low crime profile, which remained 35.2% below the UK average of 7.1 crimes per 1,000 residents. The overall crime rate for the month was 4.6 per 1,000, driven largely by violence and sexual offences (45.2% of total crimes) and anti-social behaviour (29.6%). While the area’s violent crime rate stood at 2.1 per 1,000—16% below the UK average—anti-social behaviour incidents were 33% higher than the national average. February’s winter conditions and pre-spring lull may have influenced patterns, with reduced outdoor activity potentially concentrating retail footfall in local shops. The data suggests a combination of seasonal factors and local dynamics, with shoplifting’s unexpected spike warranting closer examination. Other property crimes, such as burglary and vehicle crime, remained significantly below UK averages, reflecting the area’s relatively safe environment despite the shoplifting anomaly.
